ALTON, IL — The Alton Police Department is continuing its investigation into the theft of the historic St. Francis statue from the garden at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

The statue, which had stood in the garden for decades, was reported stolen on September 13, 2026. Through the course of the investigation, Alton Police Department detectives have developed information regarding the individuals believed to be responsible for the theft.

Investigators have also determined that the statue is believed to have been scrapped in Missouri following the theft. The statue has not been recovered.

“Our detectives have worked diligently to follow the evidence and identify those believed to be responsible for this theft,” said Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford. “We recognize the importance this statue held to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the people who have cared for it over the years. While the statue may not be recoverable, the investigation does not end there. As Proverbs 21:15 reminds us, ‘It is a joy for the just to do justice, but destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.’ We will continue to follow the evidence, pursue accountability, and seek justice in this case.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and the case will ultimately be presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

The Alton Police Department appreciates the cooperation of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church throughout the investigation and recognizes the tremendous loss experienced by the church and the many individuals who treasured the St. Francis statue.

Anyone with information regarding the theft of the statue or the individuals involved is asked to contact the Alton Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 618-463-3505, ext. 635.
